5 August 1940 - Sgt Lewis Isaac killed on his first operational sortie

Lewis Reginald Isaac of Llanelli, Wales was born in mid-1916 and joined the RAFVR about May 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training at 9 FTS and arrived at 5 OTU Aston Down in July 1940.

On the 15th he crashed Spitfire N3054 on the aerodrome but was unhurt. He joined 64 Squadron at Kenley later in the month.


He failed to return from his first operational sortie after a surprise attack by enemy fighters over the Channel on 5th August in Spitfire L1029.

Isaac was 24.


He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 15.
